Local Teens Excel In Farm Safety Quiz Bowl

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Teens from across the state demonstrated that safety is an important part of rural work and life by participating in the recent Farm Safety and Health Quiz Bowl, coordinated by Penn State Cooperative Extension.

Seven 4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America) teams competed in the state's final round at the 2001 Pennsylvania Farm Show. The contest was sponsored by Old Guard Insurance Co., the Baltimore Life Cos., and New Holland North America Inc. Winning teams received cash donations for their local organizations, as well as certificates and jackets from the Pennsylvania Agromedicine program (an activity of the department of family and community medicine of Penn State's College of Medicine).

4-H Division

First Place: Cumberland County 4-H (Mary Strasbaugh, Mark Fulton, Aaron Cornman and Brian Naylor, with advisers Betsy Walton and Duane Duncan)

Second Place: Potter County 4-H (Emily Weber, Billy Morgart, Becky Dailey and Kari Stubbs, with adviser Amy Murphy)

Third Place: Clearfield County 4-H (Dan Smay, Aaron Wallace, Scott Gearhart and David Robbins, with advisers Diane Woolridge, Darla Smay and James Grippo)

Fourth Place: Franklin County 4-H (Nolan Lesher, Wilmer Kuhns, Travis Harshman and Jay Douglas Witter, with Joey Meyers and Paul Shaffner as alternates and advisers Kevin Dice and Roger Dice)

FFA Division

First Place: Berlin Brothersvalley FFA chapter of Berlin, Pa. (Matt Webreck, Stephanie Hartman, David Bittner and Jared Hillegass, with adviser Doyle Paul)

Second Place: Mifflin Area FFA chapter of Mifflinburg, Pa. (Jessie Camp, Daphne Catherman, Sheena Moser and Clint Morris, with Sarah Erdley as alternate, and adviser Charles Kessler)

Third Place: Upper Dauphin Area FFA chapter of Elizabethville, Pa. (Josh Bush, Justin Morgan, Ryan Romberger and Tommy Herb, with advisers Mark Dietrich and Roy Maurer)

Fourth Place: Middleburg FFA chapter of Middleburg, Pa. (Kyle Hiembach, Mary Aurand, Crystal Peachey and Kevin Swineford, with Nathan Spigelmyer, Dustin Potter and John Walter as alternates and adviser LeRoy Dreibelbis)
