Dairy Researcher Selected As Outstanding Ag Sciences Alumnus

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Darwin Braund of State College, Pa., is one of five recipients of 2001 Outstanding Alumni Awards from Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. The award highlights distinguished graduates of the college and creates opportunities for interaction between alumni, students and faculty.

Braund is volunteer curator of Penn State's Pasto Agricultural Museum, which preserves machinery and other artifacts of farming as an industry and a lifestyle. He is a former agricultural advisor with the Polish-American Extension Project in Warsaw, Poland. He retired as professor emeritus of animal science at North Carolina State University in 1998 and spent 22 years as director of dairy and livestock research and development for Agway Inc. in Syracuse, N.Y. Braund also was assistant extension professor of animal sciences and project leader for dairy extension at the University of Kentucky.

He is author or coauthor of 46 articles and abstracts in scientific journals, including a chapter in the book, "Large Dairy Herd Management," and many articles in the popular press. He is author of the book, "Tomorrow Finally Came! Experiences as an Agricultural Advisor in Post-Communist Poland," and of the monograph, "Darwin's Diary: The Poland Experiences, June 11-December 8, 1995."

Braund was selected as a Distinguished Alumnus of Penn State's department of dairy and animal sciences in 1983 and received the Philip Philip Mitchell Alumni Service Award from Penn State in 1983. He was chosen as a Distinguished Alumnus of Delta Theta Sigma fraternity in 1990 and a Penn State President's Club member in 2000.

He is a life member of the American Dairy Science Association. He also belongs to the American Society of Animal Science, the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists, the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology and several professional fraternities, alumni organizations and civic groups.

Born in Towanda, Pa., Braund earned a bachelor's degree in dairy science from Penn State in 1956, a master's degree in dairy nutrition and management from the University of Wisconsin in 1961, and a doctoral degree in dairy nutrition from Michigan State University in 1968.

In conjunction with receiving the award, Braund will visit with students, faculty, staff and administrators at Penn State's University Park campus this fall.
