Functional Foods Expert To Present Penn State's 2003 Day Lecture
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Todd Klaenhammer, The William N. Reynolds Professor Of Food Science And Microbiology At North Carolina State University, Will Deliver The E.a. Day Memorial Lecture Series Sponsored By Penn State's College Of Agricultural Sciences On Wednesday, April 2 And Thursday, April 3 On The University Park Campus.
Klaenhammer, who directs North Carolina State University's Southeast Dairy Foods Research Center, will discuss the center's research into probiotic (beneficial to human health) bacteria in a program entitled, "Walking the Line: Food Science to Genomics" on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in 112 Chambers.
On Thursday, he will talk about "The Revolution in Food Microbiology: From Pasteur to Genomics" at 3:30 p.m. in 108 Wartik Lab.
A member of the National Academy of Sciences, Klaenhammer directs a research group into functional genomics in Lactobacillus bacteria species. He also has studied the role of lactic acid bacteria in food fermentation. Klaenhammer received a bachelor's degree in microbiology and master's and doctoral degrees in food science from the University of Minnesota.
The Day Memorial Lecture, sponsored by the department of food science, was established in 1973 with an endowment from Edgar Day, a Penn State alumnus and former vice president of International Flavors and Fragrances Inc. During his visit, Klaenhammer also will meet with faculty and students.
