Pennsylvania Team Finishes 2nd At National4-H Forestry Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- A team from Pennsylvania finished second in the 24th annual National 4-H Forestry Invitational held near Weston, W.Va., July 27-31.

The team competed against teams from 15 other states at the event, sponsored by the International Paper Company Foundation and the Cooperative Extension Service. Representing Pennsylvania were Carissa Ganong of Millerton, Kristin Johnson of Warren, Luke Petre of Lewisburg, and Kyle Wilson of Russell. The team was coached by David Miller of Warren. Assistant coaches/chaperones were Robert Domville of Warren, and Debbie and Ray Beisel of Clymer.

At the invitational, students competed for overall team and individual awards in tree identification, tree measurement, forest health (forest entomology and forest pathology), compass traverse, topographic map use, forest evaluation, and the Forestry Bowl, a fast-paced event fashioned after popular television quiz shows.

4-H is the 101-year-old youth education program administered by the Cooperative Extension Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the state land grant universities. More than 5.5 million youngsters participate in 4-H and nearly 100,000 are part of the 4-H Forestry Program.
