Penn State Offers Sanitation Short Course

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State Sanitation Short Course will be offered by Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences, Oct. 14-16 at the Nittany Lion Inn in State College.

The course is designed for packers, processors, retail and wholesale distributors and food service operators in the food processing and handling industries; sanitation and quality control personnel; and regulators, educators and others who work with processors and wish to increase their understanding of the challenges faced in producing safe, wholesome foods.

The course will include sessions covering bacterial detection methods, spoilage organisms and biofilms. Lois Branch, scientist and technical support specialist for Ecolab Inc., will present the chemistry and technology of sanitizers; Don Graham of Graham Sanitary Design Consulting Ltd. will discuss modernizing food plants for today's safety standards; and Dennis Bogart, technical marketing manager of the Great Western Chemical Company, will discuss the safe handling of chemical products. Practical skills will be gained through hands-on labs.

Registration will be accepted until Oct. 1. The registration fee of $595 covers tuition, parking, continental breakfast, two lunches, beverage breaks, reception and certificate of participation.
