Turfgrass Student Wins First Campbell Scholarship
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Bryant Roush, son of James and Cindy Roush of Millerstown, was named the first recipient of the Larry and Lisa Campbell Scholarship by Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. A 2004 graduate of Greenwood High School, he is a freshman majoring in turfgrass science.
Roush gained valuable experience in his chosen field of study while working this summer in golf course management for Felicita Resort & Golf Course. While in high school, he was an honor roll student; was a member of Students Offering Support, PALS and FBLA; and was active in several sports.
The Larry and Lisa Campbell Scholarship is a new, annual scholarship endowed by the Campbells and given to graduates of Greenwood High School who enroll in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State. In the event that no Greenwood students are eligible for the scholarship, it will be awarded to a student from any Perry County school enrolled in the College of Agricultural Sciences.
Larry Campbell is a 1960 graduate of Greenwood High School who earned bachelor's and master's degrees at Penn State. He recently retired following a successful 33-year career in research and development with Hershey Foods Corp. He credits the education and guidance he received from both Greenwood High School and Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences as major factors in preparing him for his career.
Campbell was responsible for several new Hershey Foods products and product reformulations and improvements, including SYMPHONY Milk Chocolate, Brown Cow, Top Scotch, Hershey's Chocolate Syrup and Hershey's Chocolate Milk. His research on Hershey Milk Chocolate flavor led to a continuous manufacturing process and a new chocolate processing plant. He has published 15 technical articles and authored three book and encyclopedia chapters.
Campbell has held leadership positions in numerous professional organizations and currently is on the board of directors of PMCA -- an international confectionery association for which he also served as president and chairman of the board. He has actively supported Penn State as a member of the Nittany Lion Club and the Presidents Club. He is a life member and served on Alumni Council of the Penn State Alumni Association and is past president of the board of directors of the College of Agricultural Sciences Alumni Society. He is a founding member and a past president of Penn State's Food Industry Group and a member of Phi Tau Sigma and Gamma Sigma Delta honor societies. He was honored by the College of Agricultural Sciences as an Outstanding Alumnus in 1997.
Over the years Campbell has held leadership positions in several community and church organizations. He was a Loaned Executive with Capital Area United Way and worked with the Pennsylvania Association for Gifted Education to help develop "LETS GET REAL -- Solving Real Life Business Problems," a competition for school students. He also served on former Governor Tom Ridge's Technology 21 Initiative.
Campbell is married to Elizabeth Zander, a 1988 Penn State graduate, and is the son of Virginia Campbell and the late Wilmer Campbell of Halifax. He has three grown children and four grandchildren.
