Tuesday July 26, 2005

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Visitors To Penn State's Ag Progress Days, Aug. 16-18, Can Learn About New Developments In Soil Management And Crop Production In The Crops And Soils Tent.

Among the displays will be a crops and weeds exhibit, where visitors can see common species found across the state. In addition, the Pennsylvania Corn Growers Association, the Pennsylvania Forage and Grassland Council and the Crop Management Association will all offer separate displays. The popular corn maze will delight children of all ages. "It will be roughly 2 acres and be fun for the entire family," says Dwight Lingenfelter, extension agronomist. "With questions that aid you at different turns, the maze will not only be enjoyable but also educational."

The Crops and Soils Tent will also showcase the annual Ag Progress Days hay show. Farmers are encouraged to bring in their own hay to be judged and analyzed. In addition, the tent will feature a quiz board where visitors can test their knowledge and obtain fact sheets or ask questions about soil and field crop management. Visitors also can see a golf putting green, which will highlight Penn State's world-renowned turfgrass program.

Board members of the Pennsylvania No-Till Alliance, farmers with long-term no-till experience, will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the tent daily to answer questions about no-till crop production. Penn State's Ag Progress Days is held at the Russell E. Larson Agricultural Research Center at Rock Springs, nine miles southwest of State College on Route 45.
