UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- At a recent ceremony honoring long-time employees of Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, two professors received special recognition for 50 years of service. In fact, noted the dean of the college, Henry Gerhold is second in university seniority only to legendary football coach Joe Paterno.

UNIVERSITY PARK - A recent waste audit in Pennsylvania showed that of the material we throw away -- more than 9 million tons annually -- 34 percent is easily composted organic material and another 33 percent is paper, a substantial portion of which could be recycled and composted.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Christmas Tree Management Short Course will be offered by Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences on Feb. 14-15 at the Ramada Inn and Conference Center, State College. This short course is designed for anyone interested in understanding the many cultural and pest-management aspects of operating a Christmas tree farm. Sessions will cover mite management, a Christmas tree herbicide update, what to do when disaster strikes, and identifying conifer insects, diseases and abiotic problems. The course will also feature a session on using online soil surveys, as well as a soil-survey demonstration.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- To help satisfy an increasing need for trained and knowledgeable tree-care workers, Penn State Cooperative Extension will offer a short course on tree care beginning in late February. The program will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on four consecutive Fridays -- Feb. 23, March 2, March 9 and March 16 -- at Penn State Greater Allegheny (formerly Penn State McKeesport).
