Pennsylvania Teens To Participate In 4-H Capital Days
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – At a time when it is increasingly important for the younger generation to be more aware of the political process, teens from across Pennsylvania will take the initiative to learn more about their government during 4-H Capital Days April 15-17 in Harrisburg.
One of the pivotal events in the 4-H annual calendar, Capital Days is an opportunity for 4-H members to meet and talk with legislators and others in government and agriculture.
“This is a government-education weekend for teens 15-19 years old,” says Lydia Everhart, 4-H program-management coordinator for Penn State Cooperative Extension. “The students will have an opportunity to visit various facilities of state government, develop an appreciation for Pennsylvania’s heritage and educate government officials about the 4-H program. They will also have a chance to participate in a mock legislative session to gain a fuller understanding of the legislative process.
“Recent studies have shown that we are failing to inspire young Americans to be informed citizens,” she says. “Most young people do not seek out information on government or politics, and as a result, informed voter participation is declining. Our goal is to help reverse these national trends.”
A banquet will feature a keynote address by Kathleen McGinty, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Other activities include a session on “Situational Leadership” presented by Michael McDavid, Penn State Cooperative Extension Northeast Regional Director and an explanation of “What is a Party and What Do They Represent?” by Andrea Mulrine of the Pennsylvania Women's League of Voters.
