Forest genetics professor Henry Gerhold, who started doing research with Christmas trees in 1956, continued to breed improved varieties of Scotch pine, Douglas fir, and Fraser fir for five decades. His work is one of the reasons Pennsylvania remains one of the nation’s top Christmas tree–growing states.
