Ulrich Scholarships Awarded To 29 Penn State Students
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Twenty-nine students in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences have received scholarships for the 2001-2002 academic year, thanks to the generosity of Harry R. and Kathleen E. Ulrich of Hummelstown.
The students each received the Harry R. and Kathleen E. Ulrich Scholarship in Agricultural Sciences. The awards, which totaled nearly $24,000, were made possible by an endowment from the Ulrichs.
The scholarships go to full-time undergraduates in the College of Agricultural Sciences, who are chosen on the basis of their academic and extracurricular qualifications, with a preference given to students who come from a farm background.
Harry Ulrich earned a bachelor's degree in dairy husbandry from Penn State in 1940. He served as president of Penn State's Agricultural Advisory Council from 1965 to 1968 and was a member of Penn State's board of trustees representing agricultural societies from 1969 to 1978.
The Ulrichs formerly owned and operated Blue Ribbon Egg Farms, a commercial egg production company in the Harrisburg area. Mr. Ulrich also worked in the dairy and ice cream business.
The recipients of the Ulrich scholarships are among more than 580 students in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences who will receive about $1.4 million in scholarships this academic year. This year's scholarship winners were honored at the college's recent scholarships and awards banquet.
