Penn State Professor Receives National Peach Council Award
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Richard Marini, Professor And Chair Of The Horticulture Department In Penn State's College Of Agricultural Sciences, Received The Carroll R. Miller Award From The National Peach Council At The Mid Atlantic Fruit And Vegetable Convention In Hershey, Pa., In Early February. The Award Was Established In 1972 In Memory Of The Late Carroll R. Miller Of Martinsburg, W.va., Who Was A Founding Member And First President Of Nation
Marini was recognized for his special skills that have proved to be particularly valuable to both growers and scientists. He is an excellent and prolific writer who has that unique ability to take complex information and simplify it for growers and other extension workers, says Frecon.
Marinis research is frequently supplemented with cost information, which is important to the commercial grower, Frecon pointed out. Marini presented the first Ernest Christ Memorial Lecture at the Mid-Atlantic convention a few years ago on How to Grow Big Peaches, a classic review of ingredients necessary for every peach grower.
A recognized horticultural statistician, Marini has written many extension publications and research journal articles. He has been a featured speaker at many extension meetings, conferences, fruit schools and other symposia.
The National Peach Council is a voluntary organization that represents the peach growers of the United States. Peaches are grown in 45 different states, according to the 1997 U.S. Agricultural Census, and the council has dues-paying members from approximately 30 different states.
