Along with helping other people, volunteers travel to places and experience things that most people never do in a lifetime.

“It also gives you the chance to develop and improve the skills you’ve been taught in your major in unforgettable places,” says Bhattarai. “Beyond skills, volunteers gain an understanding and respect for their host country, the people, and their way of life that simply is not possible without immersing oneself and becoming a part of the community.”

Peace Corps volunteers serve overseas for 27 months. Before volunteers start their two years of service, they’re given three months of training, which includes learning about the people, the culture, the country, and the language. For more information on Penn State’s Peace Corps connection, contact Bhattarai by e-mail at ngi100@psu.edu.
